Death of the Sports Car? on MSN Auto News

Death of the Sports Car?

Fun and frivolity are usually the first casualties of a recession, and so are the vehicles that let the good times roll. But don't count them out just yet. Sporty cars are far from resting in peace.

A perfect example of this trend is close to home. Within the last 2 years I have owned a Maserati 4200 GT Coupe and an Audi A4 Quattro Convertible and a fully restored 1971 Alfa Romeo GTAm (toy) that I drove to car shows. But alas, all three are gone for a much more practical and economic 2009 Honda Fit Sport (my car) and an even earlier model (2005, purchased used 2-months ago) Subaru Outback Limited Wagon (my wife's vehicle). We now make NO excuses for burning too much fuel, we don't pay a luxury tax or penalty for low EPA vehicles and both cars are paid for and in the clear, reducing our personal debt, vehicle maintenance and insurance costs... and this all despite a record year for me for personal income. So money is not an issue in my case, but practicality and downsizing is the main factor. Do I still lust over sports cars? Why, yes... would love to be behind the wheel of a new Maserati Grand Turismo S or a tuned out Audi TTS convertible. But I can wait until my 50th birthday for any one of those, I just drive happy with what I have knowing my pragmatism is paying off and I have less of a headache in the long run. www.verdemotors.blogspot.com for a blog about cars and such.
